After much drama, a historic session of the lower house of parliament has begun to vote on a no-confidence motion against Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan. Shortly after the start of the session, the local time was adjourned till 12 noon. The fate of Imran's prime ministership could be decided in this session.
According to the verdict of the Supreme Court, the session started at 10:30 am on Saturday. Speaker Asad Kaiser is presiding over the session. The session begins with the recitation of the Qur'an. Then the national anthem and Fateha were recited. However, Imran Khan was not present in the session till the adjournment.
Number four on the day's agenda is the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister. All the lawmakers of the opposition parties participated in the session. However, in the beginning, some of the lawmakers of the ruling party were seen in the session.
Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections. Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri on April 3 rejected the no-confidence motion as "unconstitutional". Later, on the advice of the Prime Minister, the President dissolved the National Assembly. The country fell into an unprecedented political crisis.
On the same day, the Supreme Court held a spontaneous (Suyomoto) hearing. After a five-day long hearing, the Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously ruled that the no-confidence motion was rejected and the decision to dissolve the National Assembly was unconstitutional. A five-judge bench headed by the chief justice also ordered a vote of no-confidence in the National Assembly on Saturday.
